Inspired of the work of Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm, a few months back I got the idea- and suggested to my friend Johan aka Sleepy Songs, that since we connect deeply with the piano music, we could try to do some cooperative work.
I suggested the names Rowan and Elder as the name of the project, and soon enough the first single Rowan was finished. A little more than a week back we got it released with some help from The Sonder House, and it’s hitting the playlists by now and is gaining some attention.
Single: Rowan – Planned release date: July 5th, 2019
”Rowan and Elder” is a collaboration of Sleepy Songs (Johan Eckman) and Rikard Mathisson, with two pianos and four hands. Both pianists have over 50,000 combined streams each month. Releases together with the New York brand The Sonder House.
The single ”Rowan” is part of a planned series of piano tracks in a collaboration inspired by Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnald’s work.

By now, we’ve all finally had to accept the inevitable – all is coming to an end 😊 The saga of Game of Throne is finally over and forthcoming Monday nights meets an unknown destiny…
”The night” expresses many things, both in life and beyond…
However, in a few weeks, my next piano track ”Will You Join Me in the Night”, completely unrelated to GoT of course but stil raises the question. Will you join me in the night – in this song? Blue eyes or not 😎
This song is a place to feel restful and in peace. The night expresses many things for us, both in life and beyond; although this song in particular captures the melancholics of suffering from insomnia, but it also relates to the question why we dream – will we meet in our dreams? And after this life, will we meet on the other side? It raises the question what is the night for you?
This song is also part of my upcoming EP ”Insomnia”.

In the beginning, man knew nothing of music, although there was noise of nature. And there was silence. Probably the silence inspired to the first attempts to make music, born from the human inner being. So then there was improvisation. And then music!
My next release ”Lake” is a step back to the origin of man. Finding the music in nature itself, I spent some time by a distant lake where there was no sound but my inner flow, on a beautiful winter day.
Hence, my next song is a piano improvisation piece, created from nothing and without any editing. Being true to the inner flow, just rec and play, and it became this ambient and beautiful piano solo piece.
Today would have been my father’s birthday but he’s long gone. This song does not tell a story but rather describes a feeling, the memories of what once was and eventually will be forgotten. But as long as I’m alive, the memories of my father will never be forlorn.
Hooray!! As of today, you can listen to this new song! The first of many solo piano releases , I’m reaching out to you with this soft piano song that soothes the soul, teeling a sad story within the music.
Currently only available on Spotify but yet many more to come!
The saddening look of an old abandoned piano, once loved but now forgotten – the image lingers in your mind; Seeing this will leave few untouched. This song is about a piano’s soul, waiting to go home. It has no name, the label have fallen off and noone knows where it came from. Hence, the song is named ”Without a Name”, just as the story the music tells.
Rikard Mathisson writes piano music similar to : Yann Tiersen, Michael Nyman, Nils Frahm, Béatrice Martin and other soft piano music creators. Follow this blog for latest news!
